Nova variante do teste de Oddy envolvendo o uso de nanopartículas

Resumo:

Damage to metal artifacts from the materials used for display and storage cases is of great concern to art museums. The current technology used, the “three in one” Oddy Test, tests for the suitability of these construction materials by placing silver, copper, and lead metal coupons in one container along with the material at 60°C and 100 % relative humidity. After a 28-day period the metal coupons are assessed for any visual changes. There are many shortcomings to this simple test. It is time consuming, irreproducible, slow, hard to evaluate and most importantly gives no quantitation. A new way to test for the suitability of these materials using a silver nanoparticle sensor is described here. Two types of silver nanoparticle shapes, spherical and triangular, were self-assembled using polyethylenimine (PEI) onto a glass coverslip to produce two different sensors. The spherical nanoparticle sensor gave a yellow color and when evaluated for its sensitivity to hydrogen sulfide gas changed colors from yellow to colorless. The triangular nanoparticle sensor gave a blue color and when evaluated for its sensitivity to hydrogen sulfide gas changed colors from blue to colorless. Color changes were followed through UV-Vis spectrophotometry, which showed a decrease in absorption of the initial characteristic peak after exposure to hydrogen sulfide. Kinetic studies were performed on the spherical and triangular nanoparticles, and the reaction rates were determined to be first-order with k = 0.0002 for the triangular nanoparticles and k = 0.0001 for the spherical nanoparticles. When compared to the Oddy Test, both the spherical and triangular silver nanoparticle sensors reacted fully by showing the characteristic color change before the 28-day period of the test. The nanoparticle sensor will allow for high sensitivity, easy evaluation, and quantitative analysis for corrosive gases that would react with silver.

No início do século XX, A. P. Laurie publicou um conjunto de livros sobre os materiais e as técnicas utilizadas na pintura antiga que provavelmente foram das primeiras publicações do género. A partir da perspectiva da química e da física (a área da sua formação), isto é a partir das propriedades químicas e físicas dos materiais e fazendo uso dos métodos laboratoriais de exame e análise, Laurie descreve os materiais usados pelos pintores do passado (da Antiguidade até ao século XVII) e interpreta as suas técnicas de pintura. A respeito da análise é pioneiro o seu uso da macrofotografia para a caracterização do trabalho dos pincéis (The Pigments and Mediums of the Old Masters, with a Special Chapter on the Microphotographic Study of Brushwork, 1914). Foi também um dos primeiros a usar a radiografia para o estudo das obras de arte, tendo instalado equipamento na sua residência.

Nalgumas obras dedica-se sobretudo à interpretação das informações contidas nos tratados antigos.

Durante várias décadas, essas foram obras únicas (pela perspectiva histórica ausente de outras obras sobre os mesmos materiais) e de referência. Algumas, como a que serve de pretexto a esta evocação (que já antes tinha referido aqui), ainda hoje se lêem com muito proveito.

Alan Burroughs, Art Criticism from a Laboratory, Boston, Little, Brown and Company, 1938.

Depois de algumas radiografias de pinturas obtidas no Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Alan Burroughs desenvolveu um ambicioso projecto no Fogg Art Museum que tinha como objectivo, entre outros, a constituição de um arquivo de radiografias das mais significativas pinturas antigas que pudesse ser útil para a história da arte. No âmbito desse projecto, Burroughs deslocou-se a alguns dos mais importantes museus europeus em 1926 e em 1927-1928, tendo obtido algumas centenas de radiografias de pinturas. Um dos resultados desse projecto foi o livro de Burroughs, publicado em 1938, onde, a partir das radiografias, são discutidos vários problemas colocados pela história da arte.

Se há livro em que ciência esteja verdadeiramente ao serviço da história da arte, é este. É que Burroughs discute directamente os problemas discutidos pelos historiadores de então, apenas com a diferença de usar outro tipo de argumentos, retirados das radiografias.
